Portonovo in the Ancona Municipality is a well-known seaside resort in the Conero Riviera. Its natural wealth is well preserved and well integrated with the Mount Conero, which looms on it.

You can reach Portonovo driving along a scenic road that goes down to the sea and along the slopes of Mt. Conero.

Portonovo is great place to relax in a natural intact, environment where the Mediterranean touches the crystal clear water of the sea. The beach is formed by a landslide in ancient times from Pian Grande, shines of white Conero stone pebbles. Two brackish lakes, around which revolve many legends, enrich a unique environment, which has become part of nature reserve.

During the medieval period it was inhabited by monks. The small Romesque church of Santa Maria was even mentioned by Dante in the twenty-first canto of the Paradiso.

Strolling along the beach, you can see the guard tower, built in 700 to defend the coast against pirates, and the Napoleonic fort, built in 1808, now has been turned into a famous hotel.
